Decodable books for silent-e (VCe)
Silent-e is the pattern where an e on the end of a word makes no sound of its own but changes the vowel in front of it, making that vowel say its name. Cap becomes cape, kit becomes kite, hop becomes hope. You'll also hear it called magic e or, more technically, VCe, after its vowel-consonant-e spelling. For many children it's the first long vowel sound they read, and it can feel a bit like magic, since that final e reaches back over a consonant to do its work. Silent-e usually comes after short vowels, digraphs, and blends are secure, because it leans on a child already knowing the short sound well enough to feel the contrast when the vowel goes long.
A good sign of readiness is that your student reads short-vowel words confidently and has started to self-correct: they'll try cap for cape, notice it isn't a real word, and reach for another try. That is exactly the moment to introduce the pattern. Several series include a dedicated silent-e stage. Phonic Books' Dandelion Readers has a set built specifically around VCe spellings, and both All About Reading and Charge into Reading bring the pattern in through a controlled sequence, letting children practice one vowel at a time before mixing them. Talisman carries the same pattern into stories pitched to slightly older readers.

Common questions
What are decodable books for silent-e (VCe)?
The vowel-consonant-e pattern, where a final silent e makes the vowel say its name: cap becomes cape. Publishers call it magic e, sneaky e, or VCe. Decodable books for this skill use only words a student can sound out with it (plus previously taught patterns), so new readers practice decoding instead of guessing.
How is this list put together?
Every alignment comes from the publisher's own published scope and sequence — never from third-party spreadsheets — and each record links its source. Sets that introduce silent-e (VCe) as the new skill are listed before sets that only practice it.
