Decodable books for vowel teams

Vowel teams are two vowels that work together to spell a single sound, like the ai in rain, the ee in green, or the oa in boat. Readers usually meet them after they've gotten comfortable with short vowels, silent-e, and the common consonant patterns, which makes vowel teams one of the first places a child moves beyond one-letter, one-sound decoding. Teams that spell a long vowel tend to come first, as in feet and beach, with the trickier variant teams following once those are secure. A good sign your student is ready is when they read short-vowel and silent-e words comfortably but start to hesitate or guess whenever two vowels sit side by side.

That's the moment to slow down and name what's happening: the pair is a team, and it says one sound. Decodable series handle this stretch at different paces. Flyleaf Reading Series and Just Right Reader Decodables fold vowel teams into short, readable stories, while Phonic Books' Talisman and Totem introduce them inside a longer narrative for readers ready to sustain more text. Whichever you choose, the aim is the same: enough repetition that a team like ai or oa becomes automatic rather than a puzzle to solve mid-sentence.

Common questions

What are decodable books for vowel teams?

Two vowels working together to spell one sound: ai, ay, ee, ea, oa. Often taught as long-vowel teams first, with variant teams later. Decodable books for this skill use only words a student can sound out with it (plus previously taught patterns), so new readers practice decoding instead of guessing.

How is this list put together?

Every alignment comes from the publisher's own published scope and sequence — never from third-party spreadsheets — and each record links its source. Sets that introduce vowel teams as the new skill are listed before sets that only practice it.
